Why You Still React That Way—And How Mind Renewal Leads to Real Freedom

This blog is from EP46 & EP47 of The Day One of Sobriety Podcast

💭 Have you ever said something… and immediately thought, “That didn’t sound like me?”

It slips out before you can catch it.

A reaction. A tone. A thought you thought you were past.

And in that moment, it’s easy to wonder:

Why am I still doing this?

You love God. You’re growing. You’re learning truth.

And yet… something in you still reacts in a way that doesn’t match who you’re becoming.

If you’ve felt that tension—you’re not broken.

You’re becoming aware.

And that awareness?

It’s where transformation begins.

🌾 The Path You Didn’t Realize You Were Walking

There was a season in my life where I could clearly see growth happening.

I was learning Scripture. I was becoming more aware of my thoughts. I was sensing God’s presence more consistently.

But then… pressure would hit.

And suddenly— old reactions would show up.

Fear. Control. Emotion-driven responses.

It felt confusing.

Because I knew truth… but I wasn’t always living from it.

Have you ever felt that?

Like part of you is growing forward… while another part keeps pulling you back?

Here’s what I’ve learned:

That tension isn’t failure.

It’s revelation.

🧠 + 📖 What’s Really Happening Inside You

Jesus said something simple—but powerful:

“Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.”

So when something comes out of you…

It’s not random.

It’s revealing.

👉 What’s coming out of you shows you what’s wired in you.

And science confirms this.

Your brain is designed to build pathways through repetition.

Every thought you think repeatedly… Every reaction you practice consistently…

Creates a well-worn path.

So when pressure hits—

Your brain doesn’t pause and evaluate.

It follows the path it knows best.

That’s why you can love God… and still react from old patterns.

Not because you’ve failed—

But because those pathways are still active.

🔄 The Shift: From Shame to Strategy

Most people respond to these moments with shame.

“Why do I keep doing this?”

But that question keeps you stuck.

There’s a better question:

👉 What is this revealing?

That one shift changes everything.

Now you’re not condemning yourself—

You’re learning.

Now you’re not stuck—

You’re partnering with the Holy Spirit.

Because the Holy Spirit doesn’t expose to shame you.

He reveals to transform you.

🧭 Identity vs. Wiring (This Changes Everything)

Here’s the truth you need to anchor into:

You are already a new creation in Christ.

That is done. That is secure.

But your brain…

Has been wired over years of experience.

So now you’re living in this space where:

👉 Your identity is new

👉 But some of your patterns are old

And whichever one is leading…

Is what will speak.

If your soul leads— old wiring speaks.

If your spirit leads— truth speaks.

That’s why mind renewal matters.

It’s the process of training your soul…

to follow your spirit.

🛠 What Mind Renewal Looks Like in Real Time

Awareness is powerful.

But awareness alone doesn’t change anything.

You have to interrupt the pattern.

This is where the CSTR tool comes in.

Not as a formula to perform—

But as a way to participate in your transformation.

In the moment, it looks like this:

You notice something that doesn’t align.

You pause instead of reacting.

You replace the old thought with truth.

You release the old response… and choose a new one.

Every time you do that—

👉 You weaken the old pathway….

👉 And you strengthen the new one

This is exactly what Scripture describes when it talks about putting the flesh to death by the Spirit.

And what science calls weakening a neural pathway.

Different language.

Same process.

🌿 One Path at a Time

Here’s where many people get overwhelmed.

They try to change everything at once.

But transformation doesn’t happen that way.

You don’t bulldoze the whole field.

You choose one path.

One reaction. One pattern.

You notice it. You interrupt it. You replace it.

And then you walk the new path again… and again… and again.

Until it becomes your new default.

This is not rushed.

It’s repeated.

And that’s how it becomes real.

💛 You’re Not Stuck—You’re in the Process

If this feels slow…

That’s okay.

If it feels repetitive…

That’s part of the process.

Because every time you choose truth—

Something is happening.

You are weakening what once controlled you.

And strengthening who you really are.

You’re not going backwards 👉 you’re rewiring.

You’re not failing 👉 you’re learning.

You’re not stuck 👉 you are being transformed.

🤍 Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You reveal what’s inside of us—not to shame us, but to heal us.

Holy Spirit, help us become aware of the patterns, thoughts, and reactions that don’t align with truth. Give us the ability to pause in the moment instead of reacting automatically.

Strengthen us to choose truth, even when it feels unfamiliar. Remind us that we are not doing this alone—that You are with us, guiding us and renewing us.

Help us walk in the identity You’ve already given us.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
