Just Keep Seeking: How Teaching My Son to Drive Deepened My Trust in God
Have you ever thought you were the teacher, only to realize God was actually teaching you? That’s exactly what happened to me in the passenger seat while teaching my teenage son to drive. I thought we were working on road safety, mirrors, and turn signals — but God was working on my trust issues.
The Passenger Seat Revelation
Picture this: my son behind the wheel, me gripping the door handle a little too tightly. I wanted to control the situation — to “keep us safe” — but I had to let go and trust him. That’s when God whispered, “This is exactly what you do with Me. You say you trust Me, but you still try to control the steering wheel of your life.”
It was humbling.
It was convicting.
And it was freeing.
Why Trust Can Be So Hard
If you’ve been betrayed, disappointed, or let down before, trusting anyone — even God — can feel risky. Neuroscience shows us why: painful experiences literally wire pathways in your brain that signal, “Don’t trust. Stay in control.” Over time, these thought patterns become automatic.
But here’s the hope: your brain can rewire. God designed your brain with neuroplasticity — the ability to create new, healthy pathways through intentional focus and repetition. Romans 12:2 says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Science simply confirms what Scripture has been saying all along.
The Three “Just Keep Seeking” Mindsets
1) God Is My Source — “May God, the source of hope, fill you to overflowing…” (Romans 15:13 TPT). Everything I need flows from Him, not my own control.
2) I Am Strong in the Lord — “Now my beloved ones, be supernaturally infused with strength…” (Ephesians 6:10 TPT). Strength comes from Him, not my striving.
3) I Can Do All Things Through Christ — “…for I am trained in the secret of overcoming all things…” (Philippians 4:13 TPT). My confidence rests in His ability, not mine.
Four Practical Steps to Strengthen Trust in God
1) Pause Before Reacting — Give the Holy Spirit a moment to speak before you speak. That space can change everything.
2) Pray for Alignment — Ask God to align your thoughts and emotions with His truth before you take action.
3) Process With the Holy Spirit — Take your questions, fears, and frustrations directly to Him. Let Him sort through what’s truth and what’s lies.
4) Practice Small Acts of Trust — Surrender one small thing each day — a schedule change, a decision, a conversation — and watch God’s faithfulness in the details.
Your Turn
If trust feels hard for you, remember this: You can wire out whatever you’ve wired in. God is faithful to heal your brokenness, rewrite your story, and renew your mind so you can walk in His peace and freedom.
So today, in whatever situation you’re facing, take your hands off the steering wheel. Just keep seeking — and let Him guide every turn.
